Hello hello friends! I skimped on posting a little last week because I felt really tired from my weekend with the Y and it was a big catch up week with converting all my old files to my new laptop and more school schedule switches. I also didn’t feel inspired to write anything so I try not to force it. I’m back with another weekend recap for you, Nashville style. Hope you enjoy and that this gives you some inspiration for your future visits to this awesome place.
I left on a 7 am flight out of Burbank airport (WAY better than LAX) on Friday to make one stop in Phoenix and then transfer from there to Nashville by around 3 pm. I hopped in an uber, which by the way was so reasonably priced compared to LA. Everything is just a lot closer, which is nice! I arrived at our air bnb around 3:45 to be greeted by two of my closest sorority sisters and a new friend that was friends of one of them. Jenna and I sipped some coffee while we chatted and then I was able to get a last minute cancelled reservation at Husk for 6:15 that night. We rinsed the plane grossness off of us and headed to dinner together.
I started with a tequila cocktail, since I figured I could have a glass of wine at home, and it was like an apple cider margarita? They have a great cocktail menu here. Jenna and Meg went with whiskey, I dislike whiskey so much so that was hard pass for me. We decided to pick a few plates to share with each other to get maximum flavor choices. We went all out for this dinner since we wanted to start out with a bang. Definitely a bit pricy but SO, SO worth it.
My choice was the chicken with pumpkin puree, kale, and some form of crunchy fried something that I forgot. I also chose the shrimp and grits for the table since I’ve always wanted to try them and I figured there is no better place than Nashville! They taste like a creamy mac and cheese/oatmeal with a smokey touch.
We ordered a plate of pork sliders that were recommended by our waitress and a “veggie platter” that is below. This dinner marked many questionable phrases that were said in Nashville. Our waitress gave us the option of a “very light” salad that was sautéed kale drizzled with bacon grease. I just thought that was so funny since no one would ever consider bacon grease “light” in LA- ha!. Also the honey lard we had to spread on our dinner rolls was simply divine.
This was the veggie plate! So. Much. Goodness. Everything was so flavorful and yes they are mostly veggies but also mostly not. We loved this since we got to try a wheat berry-like salad with spinach, beets and kale, fried smoky brussels sprouts I think, some fried dough balls that I forgot the name of, and a poached egg in a veggie broth. Really unique.
After dinner we walked over to a really low key bar, Bar Sovereign, before heading down to Broadway to experience all the live music and dancing. If you are looking for a really chill place I would recommend this. Its really dark and cozy!
Then we bar hopped on Broadway starting at Acme then Tin Roof, then ending at Honkey Tonk Central. Acme is 3 stories and has live music and a huge bar on the first floor and it gets more low key as you go up. Tin Roof had live music that was a lot of 90’s/early 2000’s songs and we had SO much fun singing along.

Honkey Tonk Central was like bachelorette and bachelor party central. REALLY packed downstairs and just slightly less aggressive on the way up. No photos to show here- we were distracted! We spent most of our time on the third floor dancing and singing. I would say the crowd was about 21-early thirties. Acme was more all ages and we even watched a few older couples dance together that warmed my heart for hours. After midnight our energy started to dwindle and I realized how much we packed into one day. We headed home, ordered late night pizza, and crashed by 1:30 am?
We woke up ready to eat and explore. We headed down to a part of town called 12-South and spent the whole day there almost. We started at Frothy Monkey for a whole milk latte and an awesome omelette that held me for hours. I had bacon, cheese, spinach, and avocado in there. I really needed food since I realized besides that dinner and pizza the night before I had a super small PB and J on the plane with some veggies and apples and some oatmeal in the morning- not enough for me. Traveling makes my system all weird.
The weather was so nice I didn’t even need a coat! We ate on the patio and enjoyed the fresh air. The other girls were coming from freezing temperatures and were coming out of their mild seasonal depression in what felt like seconds. I remember just CRAVING the sun’s warmth when I lived in Chicago. Outside works wonders, my friends.
We spent the day shopping around and the other gals felt like some mimosas. The thought of more alcohol sounded so disgusting to me was like, thank you, but no thank you. Something I have realized is that being intuitive with alcohol is possible. I really enjoy wine and beer and have a glass or two a few nights a week or will totally play along with a fun night out if I feel like it’s right but having a lot of alcohol is not something I enjoy per say. I used to fall for peer pressure in college in regards to drinking or feeling less than for turning down a beverage when everyone else was having one but now I realize that, literally no one cares, and if they do, you need new friends.
I think this is hard to realize in college, especially if you are in greek life or a really lively school, but in looking back no one really cared that much back then either. It’s all sort of a big cover up for trying to fit in. So, all that to say, I skipped the mimosas (our uber driver called them “miss mosas” and now I can’t say it any other way) and enjoyed great conversation with my friends. Talking about alcohol (besides surface level conversation) is something I shy away from on here and instagram because it’s a touchy subject. Alcoholism does run in my family and I know first hand what its like to be in that environment and know loved ones who have had an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. I also want to be respectful talking about it because it’s not something everyone partakes in, which is 100% fine! I just thought might be helpful to mention my experience and what I’ve learned in case anyone reading this feels peer pressured or feels blah for skipping out on friend events.

I had my first cronut- croissant + donut at 5 Daughter’s Bakery and fell in lovvvvve. I didn’t like the ones my friends got, they had filling in them. Mine just had a glaze on top and it was the pistachio, fig, and honey flavor! Great pick me up. This was also lunch because we forgot to get some and the breakfast and this dense donut filled me up. Totally had vacation brain!
We hopped over to Kung Fu Saloon for a beer and relaxing after walking around all day. I would totally recommend this place. You can spread out and there are giant Jenga games, arcade games inside, ping pong and corn hole outside! I really enjoyed trying some local Tennessee beers over the course of this weekend. At around 3 pm I was crashing and I let the girls stay a while to meet up with more friends while I walked back to the air bnb for a nap and a shower. I know I need alone time to be a nice, functioning human and I have no problem pulling myself away for an hour for a walk or a nap because that is an act of self care. I wanted to be able to be energetic and lively but I knew without some quiet time that was not a possibility. Jenna and Meg went off to a concert while Erin and I met up with one of my childhood friends, Lindsey, at Hattie B’s for Hot Chicken! Lindsey went to Belmont and has lived here for over 5 years now and I only get to see her when our families are back at church for the holidays or for a special occasion so it was really sweet to catch up with her.
By the time we got to dinner I was ravenous because I only had that donut and a spare pice of pizza in the fridge in the afternoon. I got the mild chicken tenders with baked beans and coleslaw +honey mustard and ranch sauce. We hopped back to Kung Fu because it was open and looked really lively. Some other bars weren’t looking as fun. We met another friend of a friend there and just chatted, played Jenga, and people watched for a while. I met a dietitian( Hi Emily!- It was super loud inside and I’m 90% sure your name was Emily- anyways- you know who you are!) there who is a follower/reader of mine and it made my whole day! You guys, if you ever see me somewhere please say hi! I love meeting you and talking. We called it a night early-ish because most of us were really wiped so I got home to post concert Jenna and Meg, we chatted, and crashed.

We woke up around 8 am and took an uber to The Gulch to wait in line for Biscuit Love, a really popular Nashville staple. Mind blown. I got just the basic eggs and biscuit combo plus some kale because my body was craving a little roughage. The hospitality manager rang me up and asked if I was from LA and we found out his parents and I live on the same street and he is friends with my guy friends and grew up going to middle school with them! Small freaking world. He brought us some biscuit donuts and we had so much fun chatting with him for a while. James, you rock!
The coffee here was outstanding as well. I should have grabbed a bag to take home but we were running out to catch our uber and I forgot. We then packed up our stuff and Jenna and I headed to Portland Brew back at 12 South with our suitcases to post up till our flights. Mine is later in the day so I get to cozy up and write this post. The space in here is huge and no one is even staring at my suitcase so I totally would go here if you need a place to kill some time.
About 4 hours into working here I ordered the Hawthorne sandwich and added turkey since I sort of knew I was going into some bad weather with flying and I wouldn’t be stopping for food until I got home to LA. I loved this thing- perfectly toasted and so many flavors. Also, fresh vegetables!
Overall, I had a wonderful weekend. I feel like we did so much but yet not enough? I tried to hit all the popular food places that were recommended to me but we still couldn’t make it to a bunch. Maybe if we hadn’t skipped lunch so many times we would have been better off but what’s done is done! I hope you guys had a great weekend. I start school today- LAST REAL SEMESTER- and I could pee my pants out of excitement. I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and rotations are comin in HOT. Lez do this.
